HBO LEADS TCA AWARDS WITH 10 NOMINATIONS

AMC’S FRESHMAN SERIES “MAD MEN” TIES HBO’S “THE WIRE” TO TOP TCA NOMINATIONS WITH FOUR EACH

ACCLAIMED COMEDY DUO, THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS, WILL OPEN THE CEREMONY

Los Angeles, CA (June 3, 2008) — The Television Critics Association today unveiled its 2008 TCA Award nominations.

HBO leads the field with 10 nominations, followed by PBS with nine nominations.

AMC also came up big with five nominations. Its “MAD MEN” received nods for Drama, New Program, Program of the Year, and Individual Achievement in Drama for Jon Hamm. AMC’s “BREAKING BAD” also was nominated in the category of New Program, along with other freshman series, “DAMAGES” (FX), “PUSHING DAISIES” (ABC), and “FLIGHT of THE CONCHORDS” (HBO).

HBO’s recently concluded “THE WIRE” garnered its four nominations in the categories of Drama, Program of the Year, Heritage Award, and for Individual Achievement in Drama for creator DAVID SIMON.

“JOHN ADAMS” (HBO), “THE WAR: A FILM BY KEN BURNS & LYNN NOVICK” (PBS), and “30 ROCK” (NBC) all received three nominations apiece. “JOHN ADAMS” was cited for its star PAUL GIAMATTI and in the categories of Program of The Year and Outstanding Movie and Mini-Series. “THE WAR: A FILM BY KEN BURNS & LYNN NOVICK” is nominated in News and Information, Program of the Year, and Movie and Mini-Series. “30 ROCK” received nods for outstanding comedy and for its stars TINA FEY and ALEC BALDWIN, winner of last year’s TCA AWARD in that category.

Other Individual Achievement in Comedy nominations went to STEPHEN COLBERT, “The Colbert Report” (Comedy Central); CHRISTINA APPLEGATE, “Samantha Who” (ABC); and RAY WISE, “Reaper” (CW).

The other Individual Achievement in Drama nominees, besides Giamatti, Hamm, and Simon, are GLENN CLOSE, “Damages” (FX), and CONNIE BRITTON, “Friday Night Lights” (NBC).

ABC’s “LOST,” a two-time TCA winner for Outstanding Achievement in Drama (for the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 seasons), was nominated again in that category. It is also a nominee for Program of the Year.

The 24th annual TCA Awards honor the finest work of the 2007-08 season as selected by the association’s membership of more than 200 critics and journalists. The winners will be announced at a ceremony July 19 at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif. Tom and Dick Smothers will open the ceremony.
