FOX’s ‘GOTHAM’ Named The Most Promising New Fall Series By The Television Critics Association

The 2014 Survey Includes Picks For the Most Promising New Show, New Comedy, New Drama, and Potential Breakout Star

LOS ANGELES (Tues., Sept. 9, 2014) – As a new television season prepares to launch this week, the Television Critics Association (TCA) has officially announced its top choices for the most promising shows for Fall 2014. In the second annual poll, members of the prestigious organization were tasked with voting for winners in the following four categories: Most Promising New Show, Most Promising New Comedy on TV, Most Promising New Drama on TV, and Potential New Breakout Star.

Here are the results:

FOX’s new primetime crime drama “Gotham,” which details the origins of Commissioner James Gordon in the days before the Dark Knight stalked the titular city’s shady streets, was declared the Most Promising New Show of the Fall 2014 TV season. The CW’s quirky dramedy “Jane The Virgin” and Showtime’s “The Affair,” starring Maura Tierney, claimed the second and third spots, respectively.

Honors for Most Promising New Comedy on TV were awarded to ABC’s coming-of-age family comedy “Black-ish,” featuring an all-star cast led by fan favorites Anthony Anderson and Lawrence Fishburne. The new sitcom edged out No. 2 pick “Jane the Virgin” and NBC’s modern dating farce “A to Z,” which finished in third.

“Gotham” continued to cement itself as a possible FOX powerhouse, taking the top spot in yet another category—this time for Most Promising New Drama on TV. And, in a photo finish, Showtime’s “The Affair” edged out ABC’s sexy new legal thriller “How To Get Away With Murder,” by one vote.

The race for Potential New Breakout Star ended in a landslide, as “Jane the Virgin” star Gina Rodriguez topped the list with over four-times as many votes as runners-up Grant Gustin, of the CW’s latest superhero venture “The Flash,” and “Gotham” villain Robin Lord Taylor.

“If the 2014 Fall survey results are any indication, we’re in for an exciting new season of television,” said Scott D. Pierce, TCA President and TV critic for The Salt Lake Tribune. “This year featured a surprising number of close races, with the high-quality of both programming and performers giving our voters a tough time as they made their picks. From superheroes and murder mysteries, to out-of-the-box comedies and gritty dramas, this is one of the most eclectic seasons in recent memory, and I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds.”

The TCA is a globally recognized media organization of more than 220 professional TV critics and journalists from the United States and Canada. Each year the TCA oversees two TV press tours in Southern California, winter and summer, and organizes an awards show where the year’s best actors and programs are honored.
